The X Games all-video contest, known as the Real series, is evolving, and this year's Real Snow Backcountry features just five snowboarders, no fan vote, and winners are selected by the competitors and filmmakers themselves.
Videos will roll out on XGames. The show will take an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the making of each video, the riders competing and the filmmakers responsible for the contest edits. Now let's meet the players. Iikka Backstrom was raised on the small, icy slopes of Finland, honed his backcountry riding chops in Whistler, British Columbia, and perfected his style in the waves and skate parks of Southern California.
Backstrom brings a smooth, skate-influenced flow to everything he does. Once the supermodel darling of the competitive snowboard world, Norwegian wonder Andreas Wiig has five X Games medals to his credit -- including back-to-back gold medals in Slopestyle in and Wiig since has moved into filming in the backcountry, which he says he likes because "you're competing against yourself.
New Hampshire lumberjack Pat Moore is no stranger to the Real series. He's the only snowboarder to compete in both the urban-focused Real Snow competition, where he won bronze in , and Real Snow Backcountry, where he won silver and took home the Fan Favorite award in It makes it easy for me to capture that. Oksanen has been a leading professional snowboarder for 17 years, riding for Burton for the past Oksanen recently announced that he will be retiring from pro snowboarding in order to focus on running Mizu, the stainless steel water bottle company that he co-founded, full time. This Real Snow Backcountry segment will be one of his last video edits. For the first time in X Games Real series history, the men behind the camera lenses will get to step out from the shadows and assume their rightful place beside the snowboarders they labor to make look good on film.
